What Type of Generator Do I Need?

Whether you’re managing a construction site, dealing with a sudden power outage or hosting an event, hiring a generator can be the perfect solution.

With so many different types and sizes of generators on the market, it can be tricky to know which one you need; therefore, in this blog, we look at the different types of generators, and what generator is the right type for you.

What are you using the generator for?

The first thing to establish is what you plan on using the generator for.

Are you using it to power a construction site temporarily, or do you need it to be on standby should there be a power outage?

Determining the need of your generator is the first step in deciding which generator is best for you.

What are the different types of generators?

There are a couple of different types of generators to choose from, including:

1. Road Tow / Portable Generators

One of the more convenient options, a portable generator is just that portable. Perfect for those that need a power source in different areas.

For example, they can be used on a construction site where the generator needs to move around as the job progresses, or ready to be moved in case of a power cut emergency. They are compact and easy to move.

With great power capabilities, a portable generator is a great choice. At Star Power, we have road tow portable generators for hire.

2. Silenced Generators

Working in a residential area that has noise pollution rules and regulations or a film or tv set that requires power but needs silence, a silenced generator is perfect.

With noise-reducing features, silenced generators are designed to be quieter than other models, without compromising on power capabilities.

At Star Power, we have silenced generators in different sizes, including 20kVA, 30kVA, 40kVA, 60kVA and 100kVA. We also have super silent generators available for hire.

3. Diesel Generators

Are you looking for reliability, a long-life span and a generator that can run for long periods of time? Then a diesel generator is ideal. They are perfect for construction sites, industrial sites or a backup power source for buildings like hospitals.  At Star Power, we have the diesel generators in a variety of sizes, including 20kVA, 30kVA, 40kVA, 60kVA and 100kVA.

4. Electric / Battery Generators

Cautious of your carbon footprint and looking for a generator that is a bit more environmentally friendly?

An electric, or battery powered generator is great. Powered by electricity or rechargeable batteries, most don’t quite have the same capabilities as their diesel counterparts however they are still great for many applications, such as events, festivals or media productions. At Star Power, we have electric generators for rental in different sizes, including 20kVA, 100kVa, 200kVA, 300kVA and 500kVA.

What size generator do you need?

As well as choosing the type of generator you will need, you will also need to choose the right size. Generators come in many different sizes, making them suitable for different applications.

Residential use vs commercial, industrial use

Generators vary in size, especially when considering their intended use. Residential generators are smaller than commercial, industrial generators.

  • Residential generator: generally requires a 5kW to 50kW power output.
  • Industrial generators: typically range from 50kW to 3000kW.

What do you intend to power with the generator and for how long?

Make a list of all the items you require the generator to power, don’t forget the small tools or items that are easy to forget about. Every piece of electrical equipment usually has two wattage numbers on their label or manufacturing guide, a starting wattage and a running wattage.

  • Starting wattage: the power needed to power on.
  • Running wattage: the power needed to keep it running.

In order for the generator to power the item it must be able to manage the starting wattage.

These numbers allow you to estimate the required wattage you need from your generator. Especially if you know how long you will be running the generator for.

Our advice: It is recommended that you do not run the generator at maximum capacity for more than half an hour. When calculating the amount of power you will require, add an extra 20-30% to your total wattage estimate as a buffer.
